Millions of people worldwide wear dentures and with today’s technology they look and feel better than ever before. Dentures come in different forms, from full dentures to partial dentures to immediate and over-dentures. They are made with materials such as plastic and metal. Dentures are used when there are teeth missing- this can be for one tooth or for the replacement of many teeth.

The team of dental professionals at Oral Experts Group in Toowoomba can fit different types of dentures, including partial dentures, over-dentures and full dentures.

Denture Types

Fully dentures are for those with all their natural teeth missing, and can be for the upper or lower jaw.

A partial denture replaces the space left by a few missing teeth. It uses clamps that wrap around the pre-existing teeth to hold it in place. It can be made out of full plastic or it can have a (chrome) metal frame with plastic sections.

An immediate denture is placed into the mouth straight after teeth have been extracted- this means that you avoid having a space where the tooth was taken out.

An over denture is a denture that fits on top of remaining teeth or over roots that are still present in the gums, or they can be attached to dental implants.

Daily Care

Just like natural teeth, dentures need to be cleaned. The best way is to remove them daily and clean them with running water and a soft brush. If you have a partial denture, it is important to remove it and clean it, as well as the teeth that hold the denture in place.

When cleaning your dentures, it is important not to use abrasives, detergents, bleach and hot or boiling water as this will warp the denture.

Eating with dentures takes time-you will need to cut your food into small pieces. Until you get used to sensing temperature of hot food, you will have to be cautious. Avoid sticky foods such as toffee and avoid hard food like nuts as these may get under your denture and make it uncomfortable.

It is important to ensure the care of your dentures as they can be damaged easily if dropped. Make sure when you are cleaning them that you have them over a towel in the basin while cleaning in case they slip. Never use super glue to repair your denture. Call your dentist or prosthetist to arrange an appointment to have them repaired immediately.

Check-ups are still important to those patients who have dentures as your dentist will examine your mouth and your soft tissue to ensure your denture fits well.
